It hasn't been long since SIM Manager 2.6 was released, but there is still more that the Dekart team wants to offer.
This version's most important features are:
- y approach in cases when the smart card service is not running
- Better handling of unused records on a SIM card
Also, some small bug fixes were also performed.
So what's so great about this specific version?
The thing that has to be pointed out is the actions that will be taken in case the smart card service is not running. What do I mean? Let me show you.
In certain circumstances it happens so, that the service that manages access to smart cards read by the computer happens to be stopped, or at times even be disabled. In such circumstances, SIM Manager acts as if no readers are installed in the system, thus causing confusion (after all, a reader is connected, why won't the program see it?)
Earlier, if this happened, one was supposed to check if the service is started, and in case not - select the service, and start it manually.
Now, there is no need for that, as SIM Manager automates this process, thus improving usability. The service will be started automatically if you have administrative privileges; and if you don't, an elevation prompt will request them (if you're running Vista or Seven).
But at times, it might happen that the smart card service is disabled, if so, a notification will state what the exact error is:
Another useful feature that was added to SIM Manager is the better handling of unused records. Some mobile phones interpret empty records as used ones, after SIM Manager wrote some data to the SIM. This happens with phones that do not fully comply with the GSM 11.11 specifications. In this version we've found a compromise, such that any phone will be able to correctly handle the free space on the SIM card.
Stay tuned for the next release.
